Dulcimer & guzheng studies form an integral part of The European Academy of Arts music program. Many students begin their musical journey learning how to perform on their favorite instruments. The dulcimer & guzheng are some of the most iconic Chinese ethnic instruments.

Lessons are conducted individually. Teaching faculty is chosen to best suit the needs and abilities of a new student.

All dulcimer and guzheng lessons also involve music theory, and other related activities such as sightreading and ear training. Additional courses are offered to help strengthen a student’s grasp of those subjects.

All individual dulcimer and guzheng lessons are taught in clean and modern classrooms with acoustic pianos that are regularly tuned and maintained - something many competitors are unable to provide. Our faculty is highly professional and dedicated to sharing as much of their knowledge as possible with their students during dulcimer lessons.

Chao Tian, dulcimer

A leading performer on the Chinese dulcimer, director of artistic committee of Chinese Music Society of Greater Washington, an alumni of the prestigious Artist in Residence program at Strathmore Music Center, and a leader of “Always Folk” ensemble, Chao Tian has established a career as a soloist, educator, advocate, and composer in both traditional Chinese music and other genres. As a lecturer at Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU) and a former member of the world renowned Twelve Girls Band, she worked many years in the discipline of musical and cultural exchange.

Her musical journey began at the age of 5 and at age 12 she gained entrance to the Affiliated Middle School of China Conservatory of Music with a major in dulcimer. Later she was recommended for immediate admission to China Conservatory of Music, where she obtained the Master Degree of Arts in Musical Performance in 2010. As an ambassador of art and culture, she had performed in over 30 different countries and regions across the globe and she has collaborated with numerous acclaimed musicians in many unprecedented projects that explore connections between the musical worlds of China and the others.

Meanwhile, she is intrigued by various cultures and music from other parts of the world, which have given her more challenges and ideas. Her music reflects her role as a leader of younger generation Chinese musicians, and her understanding of traditional and contemporary music, from the east to the west. She wishes to let the world hear the sound from the East in her unique way.

I started learning Guzheng in China when I was five years old. I studied under the two of the most famous Guzheng performers and educationists in China, including Li Meng, the distinguished professor at the Central Conservatory of Music in China, and Wang Zhongshan, a distinguished professor and active performer at the China Conservatory of Music. I have been performing to different audience since a very young age. In 2001, I entered the Tsinghua University, the top 1 university in China, to study Engineering, where I was a key member and Guzheng soloist in the Chinese orchestra. We had performed numerous times within and outside of the campus and won several awards at provincial and national competitions. In particular, I won acclaim by performing Guzheng concerto Spring to Xiangjiang. In addition to the great performing experience, I have over 18 years of teaching experience in Guzheng for both individual and group lessons in both China and USA. My students are widely ranged in age, including toddler, youth and adult.
