EAA Beethoven National Piano Competition 2020

The Beethoven Piano Competition 2020 by The European Academy of Arts is an outstanding opportunity for young pianists to participate in a competitive event celebrating the 250th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven, one of the greatest composers of all time. The winners are determined by world-class judges. This national competition is open to all residents of the United States and its territories.

Prizes

Over $4,000 in prizes are awarded to the winners.

Young Pianists (ages 7-10)

First prize - $300

Second prize - $200

Third prize - $100

Emerging Pianists (ages 11-14)

First prize - $500

Second prize - 400

Third prize - $300

Accomplished Pianists (ages 15-18)

First prize - $1,000

Second prize - $700

Third prize - $500

A special award of $100 will be given for the best performance of a work by L. van Beethoven.

Other special prizes may be awarded.

All finalists will receive a certificate of participation and judges’ notes.

Winners of each category will be invited to perform a joint recital at the EAA Theater as part of the EAA concert series.

Prize winners will receive a free masterclass at The European Academy of Arts. All finalists and their families are welcome to observe the masterclass.

Repertoire Requirements

All performances are expected to be by memory. Only unedited video recordings may be submitted. The entire program may be repeated for the final round from the preliminary round. Piano sonata movements may be played without repeats.

Young Pianists (ages 7-10)

Each round must be at least 5 minutes, and no more than 10 minutes long.

Preliminary round

At least one piece by Beethoven

The rest of the program may be freely chosen by the applicant

Final round

At least one piece by Beethoven

A virtuoso piece from a period other than Classical

The rest of the program may be freely chosen by the applicant

Emerging Pianists (ages 11-14)

Each round must be at least 10 minutes, and no more than 15 minutes long.

Preliminary round

At least one piece by Beethoven

One virtuoso piece from a period other than Classical

The rest of the program may be freely chosen by the applicant

Final round

At least one piece by Beethoven

A virtuoso piece from a period other than Classical

The rest of the program may be freely chosen by the applicant

Accomplished Pianists (ages 15-18)

Each round must be at least 15 minutes, and no more than 20 minutes long.

Preliminary round

At least one piece by Beethoven

One virtuoso etude, written by Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Liszt, Scriabin, Lyapunov, Saint-Saëns or Ligeti

The rest of the program may be freely chosen by the applicant

Final round

At least one piece by Beethoven

A virtuoso piece from a period other than Classical

A contemporary piece written after 1900

The rest of the program may be freely chosen by the applicant

April 1st - Application deadline

April 10th - Applicants are notified of acceptance

April 14th - Participation confirmation deadline

May 2nd - 10AM - Final round for Young and Emerging Pianists

May 3rd - 10AM - Final round for Accomplished Pianists and rewards ceremony
